Understandable; totally understandable! We have been so abused and literally terrorized by fundamentalist belief systems that our pendulum bounced to the other extreme: a pluralistic system where every truth is even; everything goes!

However this evolution into a pluralistic system – identified by spiral dynamics as the green spiral of bonding which comes out of the orange spiral of individualism – has impacted our legal experience in America and our view of the world. Wonderful things came from the “green” movement of mind, such as racial equality, environmental activism and multicultural sensitivity. And yet, by opposing hierarchy and making everything even, pluralism is unequipped in deciding what is just. Equalizing everything flattens out values and robs them from soulful depth. When nothing is greater or lower, there is no ethical framework to gauge good will.
This loss of freedom is tied directly to the religious problem created by fundamentalism, defined as a religious movement rooted in all persuasions, characterized by a strict belief in the literal interpretation of religious texts: e.g. Moses did part the Red Sea… “God” did become man in Jesus Christ. Period.

Such a closed door to another way to look at it can only result is an orientation towards laxism, an “ism” professing that, in cases of doubt in moral matters, the more liberal course “should” always be followed. Thus America no longer feels like the Land of the Free since the values of the constitutional democracy—namely common good, justice and truth, values which “should” be the foundation of the application of the law, seem to be regularly dishonored. When, for example, a smoker attacks a tobacco company because he has a cancer of the lungs, there is clearly a problem in recognizing right from wrong.

The very ability to recognize right from wrong is only possible when the mandate of religion – to open the Gate of the Good – is fulfilled. Seeing the good in everything is no less than opening the 3rd eye. The mind then is no longer polarized by a dualistic thinking that opposes good to evil (right from wrong), but instead aims at being in the space in between, out of the way! Differences and pluralities can now be integrated into interdependent, natural and holistic flows. Innate degrees of ranking and excellence can now complement egalitarianism; in that space, we might just discover that, if there are no absolutes, there may just be one absolute – a universal path by which to see and hear the soul of perennial truths!

Such is the touchy subject that we will explore with great gentleness during our next New Essenes show.
