BECAUSE Art has the beauty, the generosity, and the purpose to reopen sentience – the capacity to feel and sense.
When exposed to Art, both artist and audience feel this moment of supreme grace when time stands still. It is like being here and not here, in a place “in between,” where to empty the mind, and make room for change. Such quality of receptivity, where Art and heart merge to express the Sacred “heART,” is what sentient beings are called to be, whether they choose to know it or not: a released soul in bodily form. It is pure LOVE, and, as such, the Dream of everyone on “eARTh!”
Imagine now being an artiste… It isn’t hard to do, as it’s been accurately portrayed throughout the ages as a life of complete schizophrenia. On the one hand, I feel the ecstasy of knowing that I am not the one creating, but more that “IT” is creating me, painting me, singing me, writing me, dancing me… On the other, I ritually fall into the agony of self-destruction. It’s like being stuck in an infernal time loop that swings me from pleasure to harm and back, again and again, with no end in sight!
Truth be told: we are all artists, and all here to create, whether our chosen Art is to paint the Sistine Chapel, build a business, raise a family, or have optimal health. Here is the kicker: the more extreme the swing that we are willing to withstand, as we move from agony to ecstasy, the more compassionate and thus far-reaching is the Art that will express through us. Tough life being an artist!
It is BECAUSE, if teaching was defined by Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu: “give a man a fish, and feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime,” it is Mick Jagger who nailed what I am to unlearn: “I can get NO satisfaction,” and WHY the sad song: “Cause I try and I try and I try and I try…”
While Art has and is the generosity to reopen sentience, it only works for “a day.” What I want and need to see created is an Art form that interprets Wisdom Teachings in such way that anyone who truly desires to do no harm could do so, not only for a day, but also and foremost for a lifetime. That person – beginning with me – would learn to follow the Voice to THE END of the World. The more I’d HEAR the Voice, the less I’d be HERE as a doubting Thomas. Such “obedience” (a push button word for most artists) would, indeed, remove any doubt that I could be successful. Naturally I would have the faith that moves mountains, stop trying, and succeed in my creation.
This is crazy! The idea of seeing a Meta-Language revealed as an Art form for me to stop trying, and be authentic in my “heARTistry” is way out there nuts!
My plea for sanity is met by the humility and the magnitude of Leonardo Da Vinci’s words: “one can have no smaller or greater mastery than mastery of oneself.” It is also answered by common sense: “do you feel me? I am Necessity, the Mother of Invention. I shall wait for you to be so needy for LOVE that you would open your eyes!”
